Kicking single occupant hybrid vehicles out of carpool lanes has backfired—slowing traffic not only in regular-use lanes but also in the diamond lanes. ITS researchers explain why and how to fix it.  

Transportation scientists from more than 15 countries gathered in Berkeley in July for the 19th International Symposium on Transportation and Traffic Theory. 


ITS Professor Joan Walker received the PECASE award at the White House in 2008 for research on travel behavior. It came with a condition, realized last July.
