A Conceptual Simulation Framework for Mobile Radio Communications: A Flexilevel Approach

Silvester, John A.
1997

Mobile radio communications systems are attracting more and more attention since they provide a means for users on the move to exchange information with other stationary or mobile stations. The capability of communication on the move can support many services and create lots of applications. For example, in the future Intelligent Vehicles Highway Systems (NHS), mobile communication technologies have enabled two important subsystems, namely Advanced Traffic Management and Information Systems (ATMIS) and Automatic Vehicular Control Systems (AVCS). The purpose of this research is to develop a...

Inter-technology Effects in Intelligent Transportation Systems

Levinson, David M.
Kanchi, Seshasai
Gillen, David
2002

This project examines the expected benefits of varying combinations of ITS applications: Freeway Service Patrol, Changeable Message Signs, and Ramp Metering. The research analyzes the simulated results of a stylized network in a microscopic traffic simulator. The traffic network includes parallel roadways, ramp meters and changeable message signs. We have tested these technologies in various combinations. We measure effectiveness and define a measure of inter-technology economies. In brief, it is found that additional technologies are sub-additive, and more benefits come from each technology...

Experimental Results of Fuzzy Logic Control for Lateral Vehicle Guidance

Hessburg, Thomas

1994

A Fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is designed and implemented in real time on a Toyota Celica test vehicle to achieve control of the lateral motion of the vehicle. The structure of the FLC is modularized as a feedback, preview, and gain scheduling rule base. The parameters of the FLC are tuned manually using information from characteristics of human driving operation and an existing controller. The fuzzy logic control strategies are implemented on the test vehicle, automatically following a multiple curved track using discrete magnetic markers as a lateral error reference system. The test...

Vehicle Navigation and Route Guidance Technologies: Push and Pull Factors Assessment

Ygnace, Jean-luc
Lavallee, Paul
Al-Deek, Haitham M.
1990

This study focusses on the development of navigation and route guidance technologies with an emphasis on existing systems, industrial strategies, market approach and human factors considerations. By considering the different situations in the US, Europe, and Japan the report analyzes the conditions under which one reasonably could assume a wide spread of these technologies with social and individual benefits.

Vehicle Lateral Control Under Fault in Front and/or Rear Sensors

Lu, Guang
Huang, Jihua
Tomizuka, Masayoshi
2003

This report documents the findings of research performed under TO4204, "Vehicle Lateral Control under Fault in Front and/or Rear Sensors" during the year 2000- 2001. The research goal of TO4204 is to develop vehicle lateral control strategies under faulty operation of the magnetometers. The main objectives of the project are: (1) to design controllers that use the output from only one set of magnetometers, and (2) to develop an autonomous lateral control scheme that uses no magnetometers. New controllers that use just the front magnetometers have been designed based on H1 optimal design...

Homeland Security: Keeping Abreast of Transportation Security Technologies and Best Practices

Chiou, Bensen
2008

The California Center for Innovative Transportation (CCIT), with sponsorship from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), identified the Caltrans security needs and viable security technologies and best practices to mitigate the potential security risk. The project team created a server for hosting the security forum and security research reports. The access to the server is controlled by a two-level access control for general security documents and security forum respectively. We synthesized some lengthy security reports and posted them to the server. We also presented the...

Effectiveness of Information and Control ITS Field Elements on Commuter Trips

Mortazavi, Ali
Pan, Xiaohong
Chu, Lianyu
Sun, Zhen
2009

There have been many Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) elements deployed on highways to efficiently manage traffic, alleviate congestion, and improve safety. However, transportation management agencies are lacking systematic methodologies to identify commuters’ needs and perception regarding ITS elements. In addition, there are few reliable tools and performance measures that can assess the effectiveness of those elements on commuters and travelers. This research project intends to address these problems by analyzing both tangible and intangible benefits of information and control...

Portable Advanced Traveler Information Systems

Kumar, Manju
2009

Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) provide dynamic safety, delay and other information to travelers to help plan their trip (pre-trip) as well as during their trip (on route). The dissemination of traveler information is typically done through internet, cellular phones, telephones, kiosks, television, radio, in-vehicle systems, and fixed road-side ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) elements such aschangeable message signs, highway advisory radio, etc.

Statewide Travel Times - Business Case & Technology Deployment

Madanat, Samer
2010

Travel times on preset highway itineraries are one of the most tangible outputs of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Travel times constitute an effective metric to describe level of service on roadways. It is a fine indicator of congestion and is well understood by the traveling public. Under this research the current capabilities of Caltrans to collect accurate travel time estimates on the highway network, andto identify the technologies and business models that could most effectively enhance these capabilities were assessed. The results of this report, includes the following...

PLANiTS: The Case-Based Reasoner as a Planning Tool for Intelligent Transportation Systems

Khattak, Asad
Kanafani, Adib
1995

This paper develops a data synthesis methodology in PLANiTS (Planning and Analysis Integration for Intelligent Transportation systems) using case- based reasoning. The reasoner contains mechanisms for matching, ranking and analyzing past cases in relation to current cases. The current cases consist of transportation improvement actions, performance measures and environments defined in terms of spatial, temporal and user dimensions. PLANiTS users can apply increasing levels of stringency to match cases. The authors also discuss issues related to computer implementation and the limitations...
