This PATH Research Report covers the (Vehicle-Infrastructure Integration) VII California Development and Deployment (Task Order6217) efforts beginning in 2008 and concluding June 30, 2009. This is a successor to the report for TO 5217and reports theapplications-oriented research subsequent to that work. The report is organized by a synopsis of the background and reasons for the VII California project, then it summarizes some of the antecedent (TO 5217) work: the "Innovative Mobility Showcase" (2005), which established the architecture and, importantly the applications (curve overspeed...

This report describes the SafeTrip-21, Networked Traveler Foresighted Driving Field Experiment conducted as part of the US DOT’s SafeTrip-21 initiative. This experiment developed and evaluated an Advanced Driver Assistance System providing soft-safety or situational awareness alerts regarding “Slow Traffic Ahead” when driving on a freeway. The Networked Traveler system detects slow traffic or queues at several thousand locations in the Bay area, monitors the locations and speeds of its test subjects as they drive, and determines if the driver is approaching the slow traffic fast enough to...

The internal states of Lithium-ion batteries, notably state of charge (SOC), need to be carefully monitored during battery operation to manage energy and safety. In this paper, we propose an interval observer for SOC estimation in an electrically and thermally coupled parallel connection of cells. This is a particularly challenging problem because mathematically cells in parallel yield a system of differential-algebraic equations (DAE), which are more difficult to handle than ordinary differential equations (e.g. a series string of cells). For a large battery pack with thousands of cells,...

Boundary observers for radial diffusion equations can be derived to achieve exponential convergence of the estimation error system provided that coefficients are known; which can be either constant or possibly spatially and time varying. When the coefficients depend on the state, their values are not longer known and this might prevent the estimation error to converge to zero. Here, we address the state estimation problem for a radial diffusion equation in which the diffusion coefficient depends on the spatial average of the state value; using an observer with a constant diffusion...

Battery electrode particle fracture due to stress generation is a critical mechanism causing capacity fade, and thus reducing battery life. This paper develops a nonlinear adaptive observer for lithium-ion battery state of charge (SOC), electrode particle stress, and solid phase diffusivity estimation using a high-fidelity coupled single particle-mechanical stress model, where the stress submodel captures stress development during lithium-ion intercalation and deintercalation. Simultaneous state and parameter estimation based on coupled single particle and mechanical stress model is...

This paper addresses the state of charge estimation problem in lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells. LFP cells are particularly challenging because their fat open circuit voltage (OCV) curve means OCV-based battery models are weakly observable. This means standard methods for SOC estimation don't easily converge to the true SOC. Additionally, in practice, estimates must be accurate in the face of biased noise on current input, as well as mean-zero noise on measurements. As such, we aim to create an estimator that is accurate when facing these types of noise. We accomplish this with a...

This paper derives provably optimal control trajectories for the Li-ion battery fast charging problem. Conventionally, battery charging protocols must satisfy safety constraints while maximizing the state of charge (SoC) level. In the literature, both computational and experimental studies promote a diversity of algorithms, including pulse charging, multi-step constant currents, and more. Although these approaches yield applicable charging algorithms, the literature lacks a rigorous analytical insight into optimal charging trajectories. In this paper, we focus on the Pontryagin's Minimum...

In this paper, we study the routing of commercial electric trucks through an application of distributionally robust optimization (DRO) for route planning and dispatch. This approach aims to minimize total cost of operation for the fleet, and considers the variability in energy consumption due to uncertain road conditions, traffic, weather and driving behavior. Furthermore, we augment the distributionally robust energy minimizing vehicle routing problem by learning the energy efficiency distribution over a horizon. We show that convergence to the true distribution is achieved while learning...
