Quantified Traveler: Travel Feedback Meets the Cloud to Change Behavior

Raja Sengupta
Joan Walker
2015

Halting climate change will require a concerted effort to reduce emissions from on-road vehicles. While significant progress has been made to improve vehicle efficiency and reduce CO 2 emissions, surface transportation accounted for half the increase in US greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the past two decades. Today, surface transportation accounts for 24 percent of all US emissions. Automobile improvements alone will not be sufficient to meet federal and state emissions targets; policy makers also need to identify solutions that reduce the demand for car travel. Information technology...

Greener Transportation Infrastructure: Theoretical Concepts for the Environmental Evaluation of Airports

Fann, Jean-Christophe
Jasenka Rakas
2011

The presented methodology has two fundamental goals: first, to foster greener design practices among airport managers, planners, and designers, and second, to establish a dynamic dialogue between all airport stakeholders, while overcoming the shortcomings of traditional environmental impact assessments and thus ensuring capacity enhancement. The innovative aspects of the methodology are the combination of a flexible implementation strategy, the use of Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) with cost and utility functions, and a structured definition of environmental sustainability...

Sustainability Feasibility: A Framework for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Mitigation for Midsized U.S. Airports

Monsalud, Andrew
Ho, Denny
Jasenka Rakas
2013

In recent years a significant amount of research has been conducted with the objective of improving efficiency of aircraft operations through optimized aircraft trajectories, thereby reducing harmful greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions such as CO2. However, as we look at the aviation system more holistically, we discover that there is a serious lack of comprehensive research that addresses reduction of GHG emissions at airports. Although the need for reduction in airport GHG emissions clearly exists, only a few US state or federal policies require airport operators to reduce such...

Methodology for Environmental Sustainability Evaluation Of Airport Development Alternatives

Fann, Jean-Christophe
Jasenka Rakas
2013

This study develops a new approach for the evaluation of greener airport systems. The proposed concepts demonstrate how to implement greener practices from the early stages of an airport infrastructure project in an economically rational and stakeholder-focused manner. Objectives of the proposed methodology are two-fold: (1) to promote greener design practices among airport planners, designers, and managers, and (2) to institute active communication among all airport stakeholders. The study contributes to the state of the knowledge in airport environmental management by proposing the...

Selecting Climate Change Mitigation Strategies in Urban Areas Through Life Cycle Perspectives

Hendrickson, Thomas P.
Nikolic, Milos
Jasenka Rakas
2016

Urban governments globally have generated climate change mitigation plans in recent decades. With greenhouse gases (GHG) being emitted from far-ranging anthropogenic sources, selecting mitigation alternatives from a portfolio of options can be highly challenging, particularly when capital budgets and life cycle costs are considered. This research combines life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle cost accounting (LCCA), and mathematical formulation methods to select ideal alternatives for a case study city. We utilize LCA and LCCA to determine the environmental and economic costs associated...

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Mitigation Strategies within the Airport Sustainability Evaluation Process

Monsalud, Andrew
Ho, Denny
Jasenka Rakas
2015

In recent years the aviation industry has initiated new sustainability efforts as a response to society's greater needs for living in healthier and more sustainable environments. Significant attention has been directed toward aircraft and their contribution to greenhouse gas emission. As we look at the aviation system more holistically, especially in the U.S., however, we discover a lack of comprehensive research addressing sustainability evaluation standards in airports. Sustainability, in a system as complex as an airport, can encompass many different areas such as water conservation,...

Reduce Aviation’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions through Immediately Feasible and Affordable Gate Electrification

Greer, Fiona
Jasenka Rakas
Horvath, Arpad
2021

Aircraft at airport gates require power and air conditioning, provided by fossil fuel-combusting equipment, to maintain functionality and thermal comfort. We estimate the life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and economic implications from electrifying gate operations for 2354 commercial-traffic airports in the world. Here we show that complete electrification could yield GHG reductions of 63%–97% per gate operation relative to current practice, with greater reductions correlated with low-carbon electricity. Economic payback periods average just 1–2 years. Shifting to complete...

Airports and Environmental Sustainability: A Comprehensive Review

Greer, Fiona
Jasenka Rakas
Horvath, Arpad
2020

Over 2500 airports worldwide provide critical infrastructure that supports 4 billion annual passengers. To meet changes in capacity and post-COVID-19 passenger processing, airport infrastructure such as terminal buildings, airfields, and ground service equipment require substantial upgrades. Aviation accounts for 2.5% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but that estimate excludes airport construction and operation. Metrics that assess an airport’s sustainability, in addition to environmental impacts that are sometimes unaccounted for (e.g. water consumption), are necessary for a more...

Future Climate Scenarios for Runway Length: Assessment of Wet/Dry Runway Surface Conditions With Observational Precipitation Data

Jasenka Rakas
Lukovic, Jelena
2021

This report presents a geostatistical method for analyzing wet/dry runway surface conditions using observational precipitation data for the United States (U.S.). Using the most recent U.S. Fourth National Climate Assessment as a primary resource, observed precipitation changes related to wet/dry days in the U.S. and their regional trends were identified. Two sources of daily U.S. observed precipitation data were used: (1) the National Weather Service (NWS) Cooperative Observer Program (COOP) and (2) the Global Historical Climate Network (GHCN). Then, the regression kriging method was...
