Alexandre Bayen receives honorary degree

Congratulations to Associate Provost for the Berkeley Space Center and Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society and the Banatao Institute (CITRIS) Director Alexandre Bayen, ITS affiliate, who was named Doctor Honoris Causa by Delft University of Technology during its 183rd Dies Natalis celebration on Jan. 16, 2025.

“I am humbled and honored. Being part of this extraordinary event was an experience I will never forget,” says Bayen. “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who played a role in the nomination, preparation and selection by the Board of Doctorates. The ceremony was unbelievably beautifully orchestrated. Thank you, TU Delft, for this once-in-a-lifetime recognition. I am thrilled and honored to contribute to the vision of sustainable, intelligent mobility alongside such inspiring colleagues and partners.”

The weeklong Dies Natalis celebrations focused on lectures and discussion around Making Sense of Mobility and opportunities to work together towards a more sustainable, just and resilient future. The mobility week was capped off by a keynote and honorary degree presentations on Jan. 16, 2025.

“Alexandre Bayen studies the collaborative autonomy of manually and automatically driven vehicles. His research is well-timed, connects application and theory and it has solid mathematical & empirical, data driven orientation. He addresses the impact on both traffic and energy efficiency,” says Bart van Arem, Professor Transport Modelling and honorary and promotor for Bayen.

ITS and City and Regional Planning alumna Susan Handy, Professor of Environmental Science and Policy at UC Davis was also an honorary doctorate recipient.

“Susan Handy has a strong societal research focus: cycling, walking, e-activities, accessibility, health, equity, and wellbeing, with substantial theoretical, methodological and empirical contributions. She is an excellent presenter, and very pleasant to collaborate with,” says Bert van Wee, Professor in Transport Policy, the honorary promotor for Handy.

These honors strengthens the bond between University of California, Berkeley and TU Delft
