Name: Hao Liu 

  • What's your hometown?

My hometown is Shimen, a small town in Hunan Province, China. We are renowned for our spectacular canyons and ancient trade routes that traverse the waves of mountains.

  • What is your role at ITS? Describe your job in four words, and how long have you been here?ITS Staff Spotlight Hao Liu

I am a research engineer with PATH, where I build algorithms to optimize traffic. This is my 8th
year in the ITS family.

  • What is your favorite thing about working at ITS?

The opportunity to work with talented researchers and students.

  • Where’s your happy place, favorite Bay Area location?

Richmond field station, where I enjoy afternoon walks and reflection in the shadows of
eucalyptus trees.

  • When you aren’t cheering the Bears on, who do you root for/what’s your alma mater?

This does not happen.

  • What is at the top of your travel experience/destination list?

Machu Picchu in Peru. (I really need more exercises to make it.)

  • What’s the latest book you read/latest show you binged/movie you watched/podcast you

listened to?
The Stormlight Archive, which depicts the lives of struggling yet energetic individuals in a world
plagued by frequent global storms.

Recipes my wife created (she is a dietitian).

  • If you could become a mode of transportation, what would you be?

Spaceship

  • If you could meet anyone in the world, dead, alive, or fictional, who would it be?

Cao Xueqin, author of Dream of the Red Chamber. I’d ask him for the last forty chapters he did
not publish.

  • What’s your most treasured possession?

My hairline, currently doing its best to maintain its original position.

  • What is a fun fact about you?

I have great vision. I can see traffic signs from a long distance.
