Lu and Liu Receive Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) Team Award

June 18, 2025

Team AwardCongratulations to Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology and Berkeley Lab’s Xiao-Yun Lu (PI) and Hao Liu on receiving the Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) Team award for their project,Improved Mobility and Energy Savings Through Optimization of Cooperative Driving Automation (CDA) Application for Signal Controls for Arterial Mixed Traffic Scenarios. The team was presented with the award on June 2, 2025, at the Department of Energy VTO Annual Merit Review (AMR) for recognition of outstanding collaboration between Labs and projects to advance the understanding and implementation of CDA.

Led by Lu and Hao, the project was a collaboration between Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, NREL, UC Berkeley, Oakridge National Laboratory, and American Center for Mobility (ACM).

The project began May 1, 2022, and is wrapping up August 31, 2025.

Objectives:

  • Evaluate V2X & CDA application impacts on energy saving and mobility in mixed traffic

  • Quantification and sensitivity analysis of the impacts through network-level simulation

High-Level Achievements:

  • Implementation and integration of a HiL test system at ACM: V2X for complete connectivity, 3 CAVs with different powertrains, 6 traffic control cabinets, controllers, and signals, real-time simulation with CAVs embedded, DGPS ConOps
  • Preparation for sensitivity analysis through Extensive HiL tests and data collection at ACM

  • Demonstration to DOE/VTO & NHTSA delegate

  • Evaluate energy use and mobility impacts in vehicle and traffic levels through extensive data analysis, extensive urban network-level microscopic cosimulation with V2X modeling, and mixed traffic

  • Working with the SAE CDA committee on CDA requirements/architecture and V2X message definitions
