Carbon Neutrality Webinar Series: Accelerating the Adoption of Zero Emission Heavy-Duty Trucks in CA

August 24, 2021

UC ITS presented Carbon Neutrality Webinar Series: Accelerating the Adoption of Zero Emission Heavy-Duty Trucks in CA on Aug. 24, 2021 with speaker Jean-Daniel Saphores, Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering, UC Irvine and guest respondents Wilma Franco, Executive Director of the Southeast Los Angeles Collaborative and Sydney Vergis, Division Chief overseeing California Air Resources Board's Mobile Source Control Division.

Fifth webinar in a series exploring the findings from the state-commissioned study – Driving California’s Transportation Emissions to Zero. This study identifies pathways and related actions the state should consider in order to achieve a carbon-neutral transportation system in California by 2045. Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from medium- and heavy-duty vehicles will be key to achieving this vision. These vehicles represent over 22 percent of GHG emissions from on-road transportation in California, in addition to being responsible for 70 percent of the smog pollution and 80 percent of diesel particulate matter (PM) emissions. These PM emissions cause hundreds of premature deaths every year in California. This webinar will review the current state of the medium- and heavy-duty trucks sector in terms of policy, operations, and zero-emission technologies; discuss the role this sector will play in achieving the overall goal of carbon neutral transportation by 2045; and examine specific policy mechanisms needed in the near-, medium-, and longer-term to support an aggressive transition towards cleaner truck technologies.
