Horvath Elected to National Academy of Construction

Arpad HorvathTransportation Sustanability Research Center Co-Director and Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Arpad Horvath has been elected to the National Academy of Construction (NAC). Membership "is to be conferred with care on those few, most qualified... to share this reservoir of expertise as a service to the nation." (https://www.naocon.org/)

NAC members are recognized for their extensive and diverse expertise, proven leadership, and trusted judgement. Professor Horvath's election recognizes him as an "an academic leader in the area of infrastructure sustainability, including resiliency.  He is particularly known for construction material environmental life cycle assessments."

Professor Horvath is a pioneer and one of the most-highly cited researchers in developing sustainable development models and decision-support tools for diverse infrastructure systems such as transportation, buildings, water and wastewater, pavements, and biofuels. 

He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of Environmental Research: Infrastructure and Sustainability (https://iopscience.iop.org/journal/2634-4505) and was most recently a Co-Chair of the Environmental Research 2021 Conference (the world’s largest environmental conference to date) (https://ioppublishing.org/er-2021/).

At UC Berkeley, he leads the Energy, Civil Infrastructure and Climate Graduate Program, participates in the Engineering and Project Management Graduate Program, directs the Transportation Sustainability Research Center, and leads the Engineering and Business for Sustainability Certificate Program.

Professor Horvath was a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Science Advisory Board (Environmental Engineering Committee) between 2010 and 2015. He is a recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize, the International Society for Industrial Ecology’s Laudise Prize, and the UC Berkeley Chancellor's Sustainability Award.
