Arpad Horvath Appointed Lawrence E. Peirano Professor

The Provost has approved Professor Arpad Horvath's appointment to the  Lawrence E. Peirano Endowed Chair in Civil and Environmental Engineering, for a five-year term, effective July 1, 2017.

This honor recognizes Arpad's leadership in research and teaching, his contributions to the Department and the University, and his position as a respected and esteemed member of the CEE faculty.

Arpad Horvath’s research focuses on the design and environmental impacts of civil infrastructure, including water supply systems, paying particular attention to the entire system lifecycle. Many of his papers appear in Environmental Science & Technology, the top journal in his field. Some papers were selected for awards, ranking them among the top 1% of papers appearing in this journal.

Arpad created and continues to lead the graduate program in Energy, Civil Infrastructure and Climate.

Lawrence E. Peirano (CEE BS '51, MS '52) worked at Kennedy/Jenks Consultants for 39 years, retiring in 1994 as Chief Technical Officer, Board Chair, and shareholder.

Peirano's most notable technical presentations were on a then-new phosphorus removal process he proved-out in plant-scale tests at the Reno-Sparks Wastewater Treatment Facility in 1974. As a visiting lecturer in CEE's Environmental Engineering program, he taught a graduate course on biological wastewater treatment.

In 1997 the Berkeley Foundation awarded Peirano The Trustee’s Citation for “Outstanding Achievement in a Major Fundraising Campaign.”
