Abstract

Four short stories will be used to illustrate how physics and imagination can be used to diagnose and remedy some of the critical urban mobility problems that are faced today by some of the world’s megacities. All the stories have in common that they address important problems in new ways, and their central ideas can be described intuitively to the non-specialist using elementary physics principles. The talk will also discuss how the stories have influenced the direction in which China’s urban mobility is being developed.

Bio

Carlos Daganzo is a Professor of the Graduate School at UC Berkeley. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, he has authored five books on transportation science topics, two of which are used as textbooks globally.

Ten years ago, Carlos conceived and co-designed Bacelona’s very successful “Nova Xarxa” bus system, which prompted the University of Barcelona to award him an honorary doctorate.

In 2018, he was appointed as a special adviser to the mayor of Beijing with the goal of conceiving and co-designing master transportation plans for both Beijing and the Xiong’an New Area—a satellite of Beijing where much green industry will reside.
