Desarrollo Urbano Orientado Hacia Buses Rápidos: Lecciones y Perspectivas de Planificación con Base en Tres Ciudades Colombianas

Abstract:

We studied the experience of five case studies in three Colombian cities (Bogotá, Pereira and Barranquilla) in the implementation of bus rapid transit- oriented urban development. Though cases reflect an unequal success, some lessons can be seen from the analysis. First is the active key role of municipal authorities in charge of planning. Second, the institutional complexity during the planning process for coordination between transport and land development investments, which has an impact on project success. Third, the tendency of the private sector to find opportunities for capitalization of accessibility benefits. It is crucial for the public sector to understand the local market, outline how the corridor can be transformed in future, and try to reach various urban development objectives simultaneously.
